Arne RSPB Nature Reserve is one of Dorset’s most important wildlife sites and a wonderful destination for peaceful family walks throughout the year. Set on the shores of Poole Harbour, the reserve protects a rare mix of heathland, woodland, saltmarsh and shoreline habitats.

Arne is especially known for its rich and varied wildlife. During the summer months, visitors may spot Dartford warblers nesting in the heather, nightjars flying at dusk, and up to 22 species of colourful dragonflies around the wetlands.

In winter, the reserve overlooks Poole Harbour, where thousands of wading birds, ducks and geese gather, including avocets, black-tailed godwits and brent geese. Ospreys are also regularly seen passing through during late summer and autumn migration.

With well-marked trails, viewing points and hides, Arne is ideal for nature lovers, photographers and families looking to explore Dorset’s wildlife at a relaxed pace.
