Tyneham Village (MOD Ranges) | East Lulworth | Wareham | Dorset | BH20 5DE
Tyneham Village is one of Dorset’s most fascinating and poignant places to visit. In November 1943, the village and surrounding land were requisitioned by the government to help prepare for the D-Day landings during the Second World War.
The 225 residents were given just one month to leave their homes, with the promise that they would be able to return once the war ended. That return never happened, and Tyneham has remained within the military training area ever since.
Today, Tyneham stands largely as it was left. Roofless cottages, a former schoolhouse, church and post office offer a haunting glimpse into a once-thriving rural community. Interpretation boards throughout the village tell the story of the people who lived here and the events that changed their lives forever.
Tyneham is now preserved as a place of remembrance and reflection, and walking through the village is a powerful and memorable experience for visitors of all ages.
